Statistically, violists are the most likely of all string
players to suffer repetitive motion injuries at some time during their careers.
But violinists are right behind them with an estimated 25% injury rate among
professional players. That is a horrifying statistic especially since it
is needless. The Maximilian Violin pictured here is designed to take much
of the stress off the player's left shoulder where the vast majority of
these injuries originate. The excrutiating pinched nerve in the player's
left hand is the same one that started by being constricted way up in the
shoulder and along the spine. If one can relieve the awkward posture in
the shoulder then much of the rest takes care of itself.
The Maximilian Violin is a full sized instrument with all the standard
measurements but it is extremely light at the scroll end, due to its synthetic
fingerboard, and it has an immediacy and quality of sound unusual in "young"
violins.
